OUTLINE November 28, 2018

INTRODUCTION:

Thesis: One’s race, gender, age, and sexuality were one of the major determining factors in finding a job the 1970’s.

  • What is so unique about the dancers and why can they get the job and be in the position they are in now?
  • How did they achieve A Chorus Line to be one and not as an individual?
  • How did this lead to American Dreams?

Context background:

  • Hiring depending on race [ what kind of race people wanted to hire in the 1970s]
  • Hiring depending on gender [ general –plastic surgery – looking certain way that can lead you to success in the 1970s]
  • Hiring depending on age [ how does look pretty and a certain way connects with age?]
  • Hiring depending on sexuality [Stone wall movement = gay rights, how does it motivate women’s rights]
  • Difference between weird and different! how does this connect to my thesis?

Swiss National, Tourist O. “The Music Festivals of Europe, 1975.” New York Times (1923-Current file) May 11 1975: 4. ProQuest. 27 Sep. 2018 .

In this article it talked about some of the most famous musical festivals that took placed in many different parts of Europe. It was famous due to people’s interest. During this year there were over 10 different kinds of music festivals, and they all took placed in the year of 1975. Each music festival has their unique meaning and specific plays that they want to play. For example,in the Schwetzingen festival they wanted to show the audience some classic and modern work from Werner Egk, Hans Werner Henze and Wolfgang Fortner. This is just one of the examples out of all the festivals showed in the article. One of the most important theme in this article is that all of these festivals will be broadcasted on televisions, and this shows us how the world is getting industrialized.

This is one of the articles I may be including in my final essay because it talked about specific details of what the festival will be. This is important because in my final I can write about what type of festival this musical can be played in and why. I can also add that television broadcasting can be a major boost in popularity because television was something new during the 1900’s.

This article talked about some of the best films in the year of 1975. How people would choose what films to watch and which is the best film out of them all. Not just choose which is the best but which you wouldn’t watch and why.The author said that his 10 best films were; “ Alice doesn’t live here anymore”, “Berry Lyndon”, “Distant Thunder”, “Hearts and minds”, “Love and Death”,”The magic Flute”,”Nashville”, “Shampoo”, “The story of Adele H “ and “ Swept away by and unusual destiny in the blue sea of August” . The author talked about what interest him the most in the films and what attracted him the most that makes him think it’s the best out of all the others. One of the examples would be “ distance thunder”, the author used examples of different scenes from the plot that he thought was interesting and summarized the plot to tell his readers why he liked this film. The most important idea of this article is that he placed his opinions on which he thinks are the best films of the year. This means that the films that he like doesn’t mean everyone would also enjoy watching. Its just his opinion on top 10 movies.

This is another article I may or will be using for my final essay because my musical can relate to this article. The 10 films had to be the best out of the best, and this is similar to the dancers Zach wanted. Zach has his own ideas on choosing someone who he thinks deserves this job. Not just the background but something unique about them that makes them the best out of the hundred and thousands that auditioned for this job. Not everyone would agree on him, but the success of this production has proven that Zach had chose the right people to perform.

A Chorus Line is one of the longest played, play played in Broadway. During the Shakespeare Festival A Chorus Line had the honor to perform first, and won many audiences heart. The musical was about the 17 dancers story, a story about their fear, hope, and reality. They even added AIDS, how people in the 1970’s didn’t know anything about AIDS. Shakespeare Festival made a lot of money out of this production, and without this festival “A Chorus Line” wouldn’t be as popular and long lasting broadway play. Today A Chorus Line is still remembered as one of Michael Bennett best production. Many people went to the Shubert Theater for celebrate their success.

I’ll be using this article in my final essay because this article has one of the most important aspects of this production. It’s the “Reality”. A Chorus Line talks about the 17 dancers life, how reality really is, and what achievements they’d feel they’d achieve. And how have they faced the reality. In this article it also talked about how these dancers were fear about their audition because there were many talented people and not just them.

The producer of A Chorus Line Michael Bennett died in 1987 of AIDs. After his death A Chorus Line has changed their cast. While they ask the people auditioning who Michael Bennett was, no one knew who he was. That was kind of shocking because if they were auditioning shouldn’t they know who the original producer should be? This article also talked about have much profit Michael Bennett made and where did the other money went. 25 percent of the profit went to him and the rest 75 percent went to Shakespeare Festival.

This article can help me with my ending of my essay because this article talked about what had happened to A Chorus Line after Michael Bennett passed away, and what had changed in his production. I think this article can be very helpful in my last body paragraph because I need something to close up my thoughts after writing about the beginning middle and end.

In the music “I Hope I Get It it” shows that the performers really wanted to get the job. Everyone  looked desperate and they all looked confused because they were cutting them off when they are not even done with their performance. One of the Lyrics that grabbed my attention was ” how many people does he need”, this was very interesting to me because I was wondering shouldn’t they need a lot of people? This would be one of the musics I would include in my final paper because it shows how jobs are hard to find during that time, and especially when its the time where they look for faces, gender, sexuality, and race.
